Gill 1860:111 [ref. 1793] restricted the genus but did not technically designate a type; Gill 1861:50 [ref. 1768] designated the type as Morone americana Gill, but that was not an originally-included species; first technical designation apparently by Bleeker 1876:263 [ref. 447] as "Morone americana Gill = Morone rufa Mitchill." Gill 1860:112 [ref. 1793] redefined the genus but did not fix the type; Gill 1898:vii [ref. 7956] stated, "Roccus was revived as a generic name [by Gill, 1860] but restricted to the typical species and another closely related one unknown to Mitchill," but that does not technically fix the type either.
