Appeared first in Pls. 202-204 (in pt. 17, 8 Feb. 1865) [corresponding text (p. 28) appeared in pt. 19]. Also in Bleeker 1866:15 [ref. 417]. O. quadricornis, designated type by Bleeker (p. 28), was not figured. Earliest type designation not resolved; Bleeker 1865:27 [ref. 416] lists O. tetragonus as type, and Jordan & Gilbert 1883:853 [ref. 2476] list cubiceps as type. The gender of Ostracion is evidently neuter, but some authors apparently treat the name as masculine or feminine.
