Original as bassü on p. 92 and bassii on p. 240; derivation as "... taken in the Straits of Bass, and dedicated to the celebrated discoverer of that region." The spelling bassü is regarded as a printing error. •Synonym of Pseudaphritis urvillii (Valenciennes 1832) -- (Hoese & Bray 2006:1478 [ref. 29000], Kuiter 2018:68 [ref. 36369]). Current status: Synonym of Pseudaphritis urvillii (Valenciennes 1832). Pseudaphritidae. Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine. bursinus, Eleginus Cuvier [G.] in Cuvier & Valenciennes 1830:161 [Histoire naturelle des poissons; ref. 999] Port Jackson, New South Wales, Australia. Syntypes: MNHN 0000-8528 (2). •Synonym of Pseudaphritis urvillii (Valenciennes 1832) -- (Cadwallader & Backhouse 1983:215 [ref. 25473], Gomon et al. 1994:728 [ref. 22532], Chilcott & Humphries 1996:145 [ref. 25528], Hoese & Bray 2006:1477 [ref. 29000], Kuiter 2018:68 [ref. 36369]) Current status: Synonym of Pseudaphritis urvillii (Valenciennes 1832). Pseudaphritidae. Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine. dumerili, Aphritis Günther [A.] 1874:91 [Zoological Record v. 9 (for 1872); ref. 20194] Not available, apparently a lapsus for Aphritis urvillii Valenciennes 1832 (McCulloch 1929-30:337 [ref. 2948]). •In the synonymy of Pseudaphritis urvillii (Valenciennes 1832) -- (Hoese & Bray 2006:1478 [ref. 29000], Kuiter 2018:68 [ref. 36369]). Nomen Nudum. Current status: Synonym of Pseudaphritis urvillii (Valenciennes 1832). Pseudaphritidae. urvillii, Aphritis Valenciennes [A.] in Cuvier & Valenciennes 1832:484, Pl. 243 [Histoire naturelle des poissons; ref. 1000] No locality [= Tasmania, Australia]. Syntypes: MNHN A-3180 (3). Eleginus bursinus Cuvier 1830 would be a senior synonym, but we tentatively maintain Pseudaphritis urvillii (Valenciennes 1832) due to prevailing usage. •Valid as Pseudaphritis urvillii (Valenciennes 1832) -- (Cadwallader & Backhouse 1983:132 [ref. 25473], Kuiter 1993:321 [ref. 23929], Gomon et al. 1994:727 [ref. 22532], Andrews in McDowall 1996:198 [ref. 22909], Eastman & Eakin 2000:14 [ref. 24631], Balushkin 2000:S96 [ref. 29555], Allen et al. 2002:257 [ref. 25930], Hammer & Walker 2004:89 [ref. 28129], Hoese & Bray 2006:1477 [ref. 29000], Raadik 2008:670 [ref. 30624], Hammer et al. 2012:65 [ref. 32389], Kuiter 2018:68 [ref. 36369], Eastman & Eakin 2021:[2] [ref. 38307]). Current status: Valid as Pseudaphritis urvillii (Valenciennes 1832). Pseudaphritidae. Distribution: Southeastern Indian Ocean, southwestern Pacific Ocean: New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia (southern Australia). Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine. |
