Appeared first in 1835 as Pl. 27 in plate volume; description followed later in 1843 in v. 3, pp. 237, 302. Based on a fossil type species but a Recent species has been referred to this genus (see Paxton et al. 1989:81 [ref. 12442]). •Valid as Hemipristis Agassiz 1835 (often dated 1843) -- (Compagno & Smale 1985:4 [ref. 5649], Compagno 1988:269 [ref. 13488] in Hemipristinae of family Hemigaleidae, Compagno 1999:482 [ref. 25589], Compagno et al. 2005:34 [ref. 29145], Hoese & Gates 2006:95 [ref. 28997], Moore et al. 2012:7 [ref. 31771], White et al. 2017:124 [ref. 35860], Fricke et al. 2018:11 [ref. 35805], Golani & Fricke 2018:13 [ref. 36273], White & Ko'ou 2018:30 [ref. 35922], Ebert et al. 2021:59 [ref. 38234]). Current status: Valid as Hemipristis Agassiz 1835. Hemigaleidae.
