Described as a section of the subgenus Ictalurus which in turn was described as a subgenus of Pimelodus. Also in Rafinesque 1820:65 (Dec.) [ref. 3592]. Amiurus Agassiz 1846:47 [ref. 64] is an unjustified emendation.
