Type usually given as first designated by Bonaparte 1841:puntata 156, fasc. 30 [ref. 512] but Bonaparte listed the type only as L. vetula Bloch (not an included species). Earliest technical designation not researched; however, Fernholm & Wheeler 1983:253 [ref. 14214] indicated that the holotype of bimaculatus was a Cichlasoma; Opinion 1954 [Case 2905] set aside earlier type designations (Labrus bimaculatus) and established the type species as Labrus mixtus Linnaues 1758; thereby insuring that Labrus is a genus of labrid fishes.
