Ostracion Linnaeus [C.] 1758:330 [ref. 2787]. Neut. Ostracion cubicus Linnaeus 1758. Type by subsequent designation. Earliest type designation not resolved; Bleeker 1865:27 [ref. 416] lists O. tetragonus as type, and Jordan & Gilbert 1883:853 [ref. 2476] list cubiceps as type. The gender of Ostracion is evidently neuter, but some authors apparently treat the name as masculine or feminine. •Valid as Ostracion Linnaeus 1758 -- (Tyler 1980:239 [ref. 4477], Arai 1983:203 [ref. 14249], Matsuura in Masuda et al. 1984:362 [ref. 6441], Smith 1986:892 [ref. 5712], Lindberg et al. 1997:103 [ref. 23547], Matsuura 2001:3949 [ref. 26317], Allen et al. 2006:1906 [ref. 29090]). Current status: Valid as Ostracion Linnaeus 1758. Ostraciidae.
