Cantherhines (subgenus of Monacanthus) Swainson [W.] 1839:194, 327 Masc. Monocanthus (Cantherines) nasutus Swainson 1839 (= Balistes sandwichiensis Quoy & Gaimard 1824). Type by monotypy. Spelled Cantherhines on pp. 194 and 437, Cantherines on p. 327; first reviser not located. Cantherhinus Agassiz 1846:64 [ref. 64] is an unjustified emendation. Swainson's nasutus is an unneeded substitute for sandwichiensis. Cantherines and Cantherhine are both found in current literature. Swainson misspelled Monacanthus as Monocanthus. •Valid as Cantherhines Swainson 1839 -- (Randall 1964:335 [ref. 3148], Matsuura 1979:165 [ref. 7019], Tyler 1980:176 [ref. 4477], Hutchins & Randall 1982 [ref. 5372], Arai 1983:199 [ref. 14249], Matsuura in Masuda et al. 1984:360 [ref. 6441], Hutchins 1986:884 [ref. 5673], Lindberg et al. 1997:91 [ref. 23547], Matsuura 2003:1972 [ref. 27119], Parin 2003:S33 [ref. 28536] as Cantherines, Allen et al. 2006:1883 [ref. 29098], Randall 2011:3 [ref. 31468], Matsuura 2014:11 [ref. 33576], Parin et al. 2014:551 [ref. 33547], Motomura et al. 2017:232 [ref. 35490], Fricke et al. 2018:380 [ref. 35805], Golani & Fricke 2018:179 [ref. 36273], Fricke et al. 2019:327 [ref. 36673]).
