Type designated by Gill 1861:36 [ref. 1767]. Whitley 1970:243 [ref. 6601] regarded Spratella Bleeker 1870, Pls. 266, 268 [ref. 428] as independently proposed, but the corresponding text in 1872 shows that Bleeker did not intend a new subgenus and was using Valenciennes' name. •Synonym of Sprattus Girgensohn 1846 -- (Svetovidov 1973:104 [ref. 7169], Whitehead 1985:45 [ref. 5141], Whitehead et al. 1985:263 [ref. 6542]; see also Whitehead 1967:18 [ref. 6464]).
