Lepidopus Goüan [A.] 1770:107, 185 Masc. Lepidopus gouanianus Lacepède 1800 (= Trichiurus caudatus Euphrasen 1788). Type by subsequent monotypy or subsequent designation. No included species; first addition possibly by Cuvier 1797:344 [ref. 1018], and if first then type is argenteus. If Cuvier 1797 was not first, then probably type was designated by Bory de Saint-Vincent, v. 9, 1826:291 [ref. 3853] on Lacepède (see Whitley 1935:137 [ref. 6396]). Jordan 1917:28 [ref. 2407] says type is L. gouani = Trichiurus caudatus.
