According to Jordan 1919:299 [ref. 4904], Chonophorus Poey (1860) predates Awaous Steindachner 1860 [ref. 4205] by a few days; but Awaous Steindachner is predated by Awaous Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes 1837. •Valid as Chonophorus Poey 1860 -- (Maugé 1986:363 [ref. 6218], but with wrong author/date, Lévêque et al. 1989:123 [ref. 26480], Paugy & Bénech 1989:304 [ref. 26478], Paugy et al. 1990:343 [ref. 26477], Harrison & Miller in Lévêque et al. 1992:807 [ref. 21590]). •Synonym of Awaous Valenciennes 1837, but a valid subgenus Chonophorus -- (Watson 1992:163 [ref. 20016], Watson 1996:3 [ref. 22211], Lasso-Alcalá & Lasso 2008:125 [ref. 30588]). •Synonym of Awaous Valenciennes 1837 -- (Wu in Pan et al. 1991:469 [ref. 23876], Castro-Aguirre et al. 1999:437 [ref. 24550], Kullander in Reis et al. 2003:657 [ref. 27061], Kottelat 2013:400 [ref. 32989]).
