Menticirrus is a misspelling. •Tentatively considered a synonym of Protonibea Trewavas 1971 -- (Lo et al. 2017:14 [ref. 35288]). •Valid as Menticirrhus Gill 1861 -- (Chao 1978:30 [ref. 6983], Uyeno & Sato in Uyeno et al. 1983:366 [ref. 14275], Castro-Aguirre et al. 1999:371 [ref. 24550], Chao 2003:1585 [ref. 27097], Marceniuk et al. 2020:301 [ref. 37705]).
