Brachysynodontis Bleeker [P.] 1862:6 Masc. Synodontis batensoda Rüppell 1832. Type by original designation (also monotypic). Synodontis can be a masculine or feminine Greek noun, treated by some authors as masculine. Bleeker treated Synodontis as masculine (also in his other combinations), so we treat his new genus also as masculine. •Valid as Brachysynodontis Bleeker 1862, within Synodontis sensu lato -- (Paugy in Lévêque et al. 1992:515 [ref. 21590]). •Valid as Brachysynodontis Bleeker 1862 -- (Poll 1971:38 [ref. 7700], Gosse 1986:106 [ref. 6194], Burgess 1989:195 [ref. 12860], Poll & Gosse 1995:201 [ref. 24781], Ferraris 2007:304 [ref. 29155]). •Synonym of Synodontis Cuvier 1816 -- (Willoughby 1994:25 [ref. 22047]). Current status: Synonym of Synodontis Cuvier 1816. Mochokidae: Mochokinae.
