Bleeker adopted Tetragonoptrus of Klein (unavailable) in Chaetodontidae and used it in many publications in the 1860s (as Tetragonopterus, sometimes as Tetragonoptrus); above use may not be earliest, but genus can date to Bleeker. As published above with 17 species listed; type perhaps not yet established, not capistratus as listed by Jordan 1919:348 [ref. 4904] if above was first publication; Jordan & Evermann 1898:1672 [ref. 2444] designate striatus as type.
