Type designated by Jordan & Evermann 1896:466 [ref. 2442] as Batrachoides "tau" Lacepède 1800, which is not an original description, but a misidentification of B. surinamensis (Bloch & Schneider 1801). Original spelling Batrachoїdes. Also appeared in Sonnini 1803:388 (vol. 6) [ref. 30473].
