Mugiloides Lacepède [B. G. E.] 1803:393 Masc. Mugil chilensis Molina 1782. Type by monotypy. This genus is evidently based on a mullet (family Mugilidae) according to Rosa & Rosa 1987 [ref. 6066], but the description by Molina evidently was inaccurate with regard to the lack of the first dorsal fin. This means that the family name Mugiloididae (or Mugiloidae) based in Mugiloides no longer is used for the fishes known as sandperches; the oldest family name available for them is the Pinguipedidae. The type species is regarded as unidentifiable, and the genus is thereby unidentifiable. See account of Mugil chilensis. Current status: Unknown. Mugilidae.
