Gill 1860:111 [ref. 1793] restricted the genus but did not technically designate a type; Gill 1861:50 [ref. 1768] designated the type as Morone americana Gill, but that was not an originally-included species; first technical designation apparently by Bleeker 1876:263 [ref. 447] as "Morone americana Gill = Morone rufa Mitchill."
