Scolopsis Cuvier [G.] 1814:90 Fem. Scolopsis sayanus Gilliams 1824. Type by subsequent monotypy. Usually dated to Cuvier 1815:361 [ref. 1019]. In 1816:280 [ref. 993], Cuvier mentions only "le kurite" and "botche" as figured by Russell. By 1829:178 [ref. 995] Cuvier had adopted the name Scolopsides; first addition of available species in Scolopsis of 1814 is apparently Scolopsis sayanus Gilliams 1824 (Aug.), predating Scolopsis lineatus Quoy & Gaimard 1824 (18 Dec.); type would be sayanus by subsequent monotypy. Scolopsis sayanus is the freshwater North American pirate perch Aphredoderus sayanus. The ICZN should be petitioned to select another species, perhaps Scolopsis lineatus Quoy & Gaimard 1824 as type to preserve use of this genus for marine species of Nemipteridae (formerly Scolopsidae). Kottelat 2013:238 [ref. 32989] suggests that if curite Cuvier 1815 is available, then it could be the type; otherwise we need a petition. •Valid as Scolopsis Cuvier 1814 -- (Akazaki in Masuda et al. 1984:175 [ref. 6441], Russell 1986:601 [ref. 5708], Russell 1990:96 [ref. 19228], Chen 1997:345 [ref. 23444], Russell 2001:3053 [ref. 26106], Allen et al. 2006:1248 [ref. 29090], Kottelat 2013:349 [ref. 32989], Hung et al. 2017:8 [ref. 35385], Motomura et al. 2017:151 [ref. 35490], Fricke et al. 2018:211 [ref. 35805], Golani & Fricke 2018:95 [ref. 36273], Nakamura et al. 2018:222 [ref. 36223], Fricke et al. 2019:166 [ref. 36673], Nakamura et al. 2019:119 [ref. 36815], Russell et al. 2022:503 [ref. 39103]). Current status: Valid as Scolopsis Cuvier 1814. Nemipteridae.
