Torpedo Houttuyn [M.] 1764:Pt. 6, p. 453 Fem. Raja torpedo Linnaeus 1758. Type by absolute tautonymy (generally accepted). Type by tautonymy. Appeared in pt. 6 (Amphibia) of Houttuyn 1764 [ref. 2219]. The name Torpedo was used by Houttuyn not for a genus but for a species (F. Welter-Schultes, pers. comm., June 2005). The genus must therefore date to Duméril 1805.
