Stenotomus Gill [T. N.] 1865:266 Masc. Sparus argyrops Linnaeus 1766. Type by monotypy. Text unclear, but apparently Gill proposed to unite three species under argyrops and provide a new name, therefore type by monotypy. •Valid as Stenotomus Gill 1865 -- (Castro-Aguirre et al. 1999:348 [ref. 24550], Carpenter 2003:1555 [ref. 27092], Chiba et al. 2009:166 [ref. 30869], Parenti 2019:66 [ref. 36892]).
