Objectively invalid; preoccupied by Asellus G. St. Hilaire 1762 in Crustacea (not Plumier in Lacepède 1800 in fishes, not available). Also predates Asellus Valenciennes 1838 (Gadidae). Can be considered a nomen oblitum. •Synonym of Merlangius or Pollachius, depending on type designation. 1°Homonym. Current status: Synonym of Pollachius Nilsson 1832. Gadidae.
