E.] 1803:124, 127 [Histoire naturelle des poissons (Lacepède) v. 5; ref. 4930] America, especially the Carolinas [U.S.A.] [in error]. Lectotype: BMNH 1853.11.12.193. Type catalog: Ferraris 2007:167 [ref. 29155]. An unneeded new name for and objective synonym of Silurus cataphractus Linnaeus 1758 (to avoid Strickland tautonomy). Objectively invalid; preoccupied by Cataphractus americanus Bloch & Schneider 1801. Also was based on previous authors (Linnaeus, etc.), but apparently independent of Cataphractus americanus Bloch & Schneider 1801 as no reference was made to Bloch & Schneider.
