Distribution: South America: upper Amazon and Orinoco River basins (regions Juruá, Ucayali, Marañon-Nanay, Napo-Ambyiacu, Putumayo, Japurá, Lower Orinoco, Upper Orinoco, Apure) (Venezuela, Colombia, Peru and Brazil). Habitat: freshwater. pyrophthalma, Moenkhausia Costa [W. J. E. M.] 1994:25, Figs. 3-4 [Zoologischer Anzeiger v. 232 (no. 1-2); ref. 22048] Stream crossing road between Agua Boa and Cocalinho, about 14°03'S, 51°47'W, Rio Araguaia-Tocantins basin, Brazil. Holotype: MNRJ 12431. Paratypes: MHNG 2542.18 (7), MNRJ 12432 (14), MZUSP 45290 (7), UFRJ 1292 (7), 1293 (4, c&s).
