Type catalog: Nielsen 1974:78 [ref. 9588], Krefft 1978:14 [ref. 9884]. •Valid as Monomitopus americanus (Nielsen 1971) -- (Carter & Cohen 1985:87 [ref. 5145], Nielsen & Cohen in Nielsen et al. 1999:78 [ref. 24448], Menezes & Figueiredo in Menezes et al. 2003:59 [ref. 27192], Lins Oliveira et al. 2015:113 [ref. 37485], Nión et al. 2016:40 [ref. 35565]). •Valid as Selachophidium americanum (Nielsen 1971) -- (Girard & Johnson 2024:10 [ref. 41368]). Current status: Valid as Selachophidium americanum (Nielsen 1971). Ophidiidae: Neobythitinae. Distribution: Southwestern Atlantic: Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil) south to Uruguay. IUCN (2019): Least Concern (as Monomitopus americanus). Habitat: marine.
