nuttingi, Polyipnus Gilbert [C. H.] 1905:609, Pl. 73 [Bulletin of the U. S. Fish Commission v. 23 (pt 2) [for 1903]; ref. 1631] Approach to Pailolo Channel, between Molokai Island and Maui Island, Hawaiian Islands, Albatross station 4088, depth 297-306 fathoms. Böhlke 1953:17 [ref. 12291] considers this species to date to Gilbert in Jordan & Starks 1904:581 [ref. 2526] where stereope was compared to nuttingi, but the comparison probably does not clearly define characters for nuttingi, only in a negative sense, e.g., "The species [stereope] differs from P. nuttingi in being bright silver without dark specks scattered over the silver ground, ..." •Valid as Polyipnus nuttingi Gilbert 1905 -- (Harold 1989:875 [ref. 13508], Harold 1994:513 [ref. 21941], Mundy 2005:170 [ref. 28379], Vourey et al. 2017:574 [ref. 35312]). Current status: Valid as Polyipnus nuttingi Gilbert 1905. Sternoptychidae: Sternoptychinae. Distribution: Hawaiian Islands; record from Zanzibar (western Indian Ocean) needs verification. Habitat: marine.
