lucifer, Astronesthes Gilbert [C. H.] 1905:605, Pl. 71 (fig. 3) [Bulletin of the U. S. Fish Commission v. 23 (pt 2) [for 1903]; ref. 1631] Off Kauai Island, Hawaiian Islands, U.S.A., Albatross station 4026, depth 368-1021 fathoms (net probably not on the bottom). Holotype: USNM 51516. Paratypes: (1). Combined with a feminine genus, the adjective [lux + fero = photophore bearing] should be lucifera. •Valid as Astronesthes lucifera Gilbert 1905 [often seen as lucifer] -- (Yamamoto in Okamura et al. 1982:79, 327 [ref. 8256], Fujii in Masuda et al. 1984:49 [ref. 6441], Machida in Okamura & Kitajima 1984:153, 338 [ref. 8057], Paxton et al. 1989:195 [ref. 12442], Parin & Borodulina 1994:466 [ref. 22912], Harold 1999:1906 [ref. 24741], Nakabo 2000:327 [ref. 25086], Shinohara et al. 2001:297 [ref. 25995], Nakabo 2002:326 [ref. 26001], Parin & Borodulina 2003:594 [ref. 27333], Mundy 2005:175 [ref. 28379], Paxton et al. 2006:436 [ref. 28995], Liao et al. 2006:523 [ref. 29419], Fricke et al. 2011:357 [ref. 31242], Fricke et al. 2014:25 [ref. 33932]). Current status: Valid as Astronesthes lucifera Gilbert 1905. Stomiidae: Astronesthinae. Distribution: Indo-West Pacific: Yemen east to Hawaiian Islands, north to Taiwan, south to Loyalty Islands (New Caledonia). Habitat: marine.
