splendidus, Astronesthes Brauer [A.] 1902:288 [Zoologischer Anzeiger v. 25 (no. 668); ref. 631] South of Sri Lanka, Indian Ocean, 4°56'N, 78°15'13"E, Valdivia station 217, depth 2000 meters. Holotype (unique): Whereabouts unknown. The gender of Astronesthes is feminine, and splendidus an adjective; therefore ending splendida is correct. •Valid as Astronesthes splendidus Brauer 1902 -- (Fujii in Masuda et al. 1984:49 [ref. 6441], Paxton et al. 1989:195 [ref. 12442], Harold 1999:1906 [ref. 24741], Hutchins 2001:19 [ref. 25847], Parin & Borodulina 2000:S22 [ref. 26044], Parin & Borodulina 2003:594 [ref. 27333], Mundy 2005:176 [ref. 28379], Fricke et al. 2011:357 [ref. 31242]). •Valid as Astronesthes splendida Brauer 1902 -- (Nakabo 2000:328 [ref. 25086], Nakabo 2002:328 [ref. 26001], Paxton et al. 2006:437 [ref. 28995], Liao et al. 2006:524 [ref. 29419]). Current status: Valid as Astronesthes splendida Brauer 1902. Stomiidae: Astronesthinae. Distribution: Indo-West Pacific: South Africa east to Hawaiian Islands (U.S.A.) and 6°56'N, 140°32'W, south to New Caledonia. Habitat: marine.
