Distribution: Eastern Indian Ocean, western Pacific: Christmas Island and Western Australia east to Philippines, north to Pacific coast of central Japan, south to northern Australia. Former Red Sea records are now assigned to S. lessepsianus Russell, Golani & Tikochinski 2015. Habitat: marine.
