Paratypes: USNM 78235 (1), 220978-79 (2, 1), 220980 (now 1). •Valid as Bathygadus spongiceps Gilbert & Hubbs 1920 -- (Howes & Crimmen 1990:189 [ref. 15692], Iwamoto in Cohen et al. 1990:94 [ref. 18936], Iwamoto & Williams 1999:115 [ref. 23875], Iwamoto 1999:1994 [ref. 24761], Merrett & Iwamoto 2000:741 [ref. 25037] as cf. spongiceps, Iwamoto in Randall & Lim 2000:595 [ref. 25122], Iwamoto & Graham 2001:423 [ref. 25637] as cf. spongiceps, Hutchins 2001:23 [ref. 25847], Iwamoto & McMillan 2008:319 [ref. 30636], McMillan & Iwamoto 2015:830 [ref. 34263] as cf. spongiceps). Current status: Valid as Bathygadus spongiceps Gilbert & Hubbs 1920. Bathygadidae. Distribution: Western Pacific (Philippines to ? New Zealand). Southeastern Indian Ocean off Australia and east to New Zealand (cf. spongiceps). Habitat: marine.
