Sometimes dated to Koelreuter 1770, Pallas 1811 or Pallas 1814. Based on Gadus sp. (vernacular name Nawaga) of Koelreuter 1770:484 [ref. 26182]. Listed by Bonnaterre 1788:46 [ref. 4940] as a synonym of Gadus callarias with the vernacular name 'Navaga". Appeared as Gadus callarias var. nowaga in Bloch & Schneider 1801:7 [ref. 471].
