Paralectotypes: USNM 44669 (1). Lectotype established in Jordan & Evermann 1898 [ref. 2445] and established (as figured specimen) in caption to Pl. 355, p. 3306 in Jordan & Evermann 1900 [ref. 2446]. •Valid as Monomitopus agassizii (Goode & Bean 1896) -- (Arai in Uyeno et al. 1983:233 [ref. 14275], Carter & Cohen 1985:86 [ref. 5145], McEachran & Fechhelm 1998:722 [ref. 23897], Nielsen & Cohen in Nielsen et al. 1999:78 [ref. 24448] as agassizi, Nielsen & Robins 2003:969 [ref. 27008], Moore et al. 2003:207 [ref. 27076], Garrido-Linares & Acero P. 2006:294 [ref. 28946], Mincarone et al. 2008:53 [ref. 29626], Klautau et al. 2020:8 [ref. 37903], Robertson et al. 2022:86 [ref. 39353], Girard et al. 2023:273 [ref. 40379], Page et al. 2023:109 [ref. 40505], Girard & Johnson 2024:3 [ref. 41368]). Current status: Valid as Monomitopus agassizii (Goode & Bean 1896). Ophidiidae: Neobythitinae. Distribution: Western Atlantic: North Carolina (U.S.A.) south to ParĂ¡ (Brazil), including Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. IUCN (2017): Least Concern. Habitat: marine.
