Based on the 'Cephalus fluviatilis major' in manuscript description of Plumier (Charles Plumier, 1646-1704, French explorer and botanist). See account of Cyclopterus nudus Linnaeus 1758. •Wrongly a synonym of Gobiesox nudus (Linnaeus 1758) based on misapplication by Briggs -- (Briggs 1955:94 [ref. 637], Ferraris in Reis et al. 2003:512 [ref. 27061]). •Valid as Gobiesox cephalus Lacepède 1800 -- (Fernholm & Wheeler 1983:271 [ref. 20707], Conway et al. 2017:[9] [ref. 35287], Angulo 2021:11 [ref. 38913], Angulo et al. 2023:68 [ref. 40676]). Current status: Valid as Gobiesox cephalus Lacepède 1800. Gobiesocidae: Gobiesocinae. Distribution: Central America and South America: Caribbean drainages (Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Honduras, Jamaica, Panama, Venezuela); islands of the Caribbean. Habitat: freshwater.
