belone, Esox Linnaeus [C.] 1760:126 [Fauna Svecica, sistens Animalia Sveciae Regni, ed. II; ref. 13326] European seas. No types known. Neotype designated by Fricke 1999:35 [ref. 24101], but withdrawn in Fricke 2000:639 [ref. 24537]. Placed on Official List in ICZN Opinion 225 as type species of Belone Cuvier 1816 (See also Esox bellone Linnaeus 1758). See Collette 2003:3 [ref. 27306] for subspecies -- Three subspecies were recognized by Collette and Parin (1970 [ref. 7415]): B. b. belone (Linnaeus 1760) from northeastern Atlantic Ocean; B. b. euxini G√ľnther 1866 from the Black Sea and Sea of Azov; and B. b. acus Risso 1827 from the Mediterranean Sea and adjacent parts of the Atlantic, Madeira, Canary Islands, Azores, and south to the Cape Verde Islands. •Valid as Belone belone (Linnaeus 1760), subspecies belone (Linnaeus 1760) (often dated 1761) -- (Collette 2003:13 [ref. 27306], Parin et al. 2014:196 [ref. 33547], Collette 2016:2123 [ref. 34601], Mecklenburg et al. 2018:166 [ref. 36370]). •Valid as Belone belone (Linnaeus 1760) (often dated 1761) -- (Collette & Parin 1970:11 [ref. 7415], Parin 1973:258 [ref. 7191], Fricke 1999:35 [ref. 24101], Bilecenoğlu et al. 2002:60 [ref. 26753], Collette 2003:2 [ref. 27306], Fricke 2007:28 [ref. 30577], Ninua & Japoshvili 2008:169 [ref. 31251], Lipej & Dulčić 2010:34 [ref. 36649], Martins & Carneiro 2018:97 [ref. 36550], Artüz & Fricke 2019:554 [ref. 36612]). Current status: Valid as Belone belone (Linnaeus 1760). Belonidae. Distribution: Baltic Sea, North Sea, eastern Atlantic and adjacent Arctic, including Madeira. Habitat: brackish, marine.
