Holotype: USNM 199393. Paratypes: BMNH 1965.10.19.16 (1), BPBM 7275 (1), FMNH 44422 (3), CAS-SU 63239 (1), USNM 199392 (1), UW 18603 (1). Additional non-type material: FMNH (4 lots, 13), CAS-SU (5 lots, 15), USNM (15 lots, 28), UW (5 lots, 8). Type catalog: Ibarra & Stewart 1987:59 [ref. 12367] but only as 3 paratypes, original mentions 13. Appeared first as name only in abstract in Greenfield 1966 [ref. 1890]. •Synonym of Myripristis violacea Bleeker 1851 -- (Randall & Greenfield 1996:53 [ref. 22543]). •Valid as Myripristis woodsi Greenfield 1974 -- (Kotlyar 1996:89 [ref. 23292], Randall & Yamakawa 1996:221 [ref. 22430], Kotlyar 1998:208 [ref. 24674], Myers 1999:81 [ref. 23965], Randall & Greenfield 1999:2234 [ref. 24790], Randall & Greenfield 1999:2256 [ref. 24790], Randall & Earle 2000:9 [ref. 25806], Myers & Donaldson 2003:616 [ref. 27495], Randall 2005:91 [ref. 28239], Fricke et al. 2011:373 [ref. 31242], Delrieu-Trottin et al. 2015:5 [ref. 33988]).
