No species of Hypoplectrus occurs in the eastern Pacific, so the identification by Chirichigno and Vélez is in error (email from Ross Robertson 3/31/08). •Synonym of Lutjanus argentiventris (Peters 1869) -- (Meisler 1985:1064 [ref. 22492]). •Incorrectly treated as valid as Hypoplectrus lamprurus (Jordan & Gilbert 1882) in the Serranidae -- (Chirichigno F. & Vélez D. 1998:355 [ref. 24555]).
