Based on description in manuscript by Forster (Johann Reinhold Forster, 1729-1798, German explorer and naturalist of Cook's second voyage). Manuscript name, as litoreus, mentioned under account of Blennius quadridactylus [name in synonymy]; made available back to Forster as above by later use as valid by Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes 1836:389 [ref. 1005] but spelled littoreus. •Valid as Taumakoides littoreus (Forster 1801) -- (Hardy 1985:364 [ref. 5184], Paulin et al. 1989:178 [ref. 24556]). •Valid as Acanthoclinus littoreus (Forster 1801) -- (Smith-Vaniz & Johnson 1990:225 [ref. 16561], Paulin & Roberts 1992:54 [ref. 24625], Mooi & Gill 2004:181 [ref. 27890], Stewart 2015:1209 [ref. 34196]). Current status: Valid as Acanthoclinus littoreus (Forster 1801). Plesiopidae: Acanthoclininae. Distribution: New Zealand and offshore islands. Habitat: marine.
