Holotype: USNM 87411. Paratypes: USNM 87412 (2). Type catalog: Collette & Knapp 1967:71 [ref. 20211]. •Synonym of Etheostoma flabellare Rafinesque 1819, but a valid subsepcies -- (Lee et al. 1980:647 [ref. 22416], Scharpf 2008:25 [ref. 30399] as brevispina). •Synonym of Etheostoma flabellare Rafinesque 1819 -- (Page 1983:147 [ref. 22189]). •Valid as Etheostoma brevispinum (Coker 1926) -- (Blanton & Schuster 2008:851 [ref. 29948], Scharpf 2009:20 [ref. 30400], Page & Burr 2011:593 [ref. 31215], Page et al. 2013:136 [ref. 32708], Page et al. 2023:198 [ref. 40505]). Current status: Valid as Etheostoma brevispinum (Coker 1926). Percidae: Etheostomatinae. Distribution: Eastern North America: North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia (eastern U.S.A.). Habitat: freshwater.
