Holotype (unique): NMW 23289-90 [largest species]. Steindachner's specimen: NMW 23289-90 (1, smallest). New name for Geophagus brasiliensis Steindachner 1880:56 [ref. 14403] non brasiliensis Quoy & Gaimard. First appeared as name only in Eigenmann 1909:317 [ref. 1223]. Later in more detail in Eigenmann 1922:195 and Pl. 32 (fig. 3) [ref. 1243].
