F.] in Eigenmann 1910:478 [Catalogue of the fresh-water fishes of tropical and south temperate America v. 3 (pt 4); ref. 1224] Río Cauca near Caceres, Colombia. Holotype (unique): NMW 23289-90 [largest species]. Steindachner's specimen: NMW 23289-90 (1, smallest). New name for Geophagus brasiliensis Steindachner 1880:56 [ref. 14403] non brasiliensis Quoy & Gaimard. First appeared as name only in Eigenmann 1909:317 [ref. 1223]. Later in more detail in Eigenmann 1922:195 and Pl. 32 (fig. 3) [ref. 1243]. Based on literature source. •Synonym of Geophagus hondae Regan 1912 -- (Gosse 1976:82 [ref. 7029] with date 1922). •Valid as Geophagus steindachneri Eigenmann & Hildebrand 1910 -- (Gosse & Kullander 1981:15 [ref. 40995], Galvis et al. 1997:110 [ref. 23651], Kullander in Reis et al. 2003:633 [ref. 27061], DoNascimiento et al. 2017:98 [ref. 35633]). Current status: Valid as Geophagus steindachneri Eigenmann & Hildebrand 1910. Cichlidae: Cichlinae. Distribution: South America: Magdalena, Cauca, and Sinú River basins and Limón River, Colombia and Venezuela. Habitat: freshwater.
