Holotype (unique): BMNH 2004.11.5.6. Possible syntypes: BMNH 1865.2.27.47 (1, in alcohol), 2004.11.5.6 (1, skin). Spelled trichourus throughout text and trichrourus on plate. Günther, acting as first reviser, in Zoological Record for 1866, selected trichrourus. Misspelled as trichopterus in Sauvage 1891. Evidently two specimens originally according to note by A. Wheeler with one type. If only one type then it is BMNH 2004.2.27.47 (pers. comm. J. Distribution: Red Sea; western Indian Ocean: KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), East Africa and Persian Gulf to Socotra, Madagascar and Mascarenes (La Réunion, Mauritius, Rodrigues). Habitat: marine.
