Holotype (unique): MNHN A-8268 (dry). Type information: Bauchot 1963:29 [ref. 19171]. Based on Commerson description and figure; type specimen is also holotype of Labrus macrourus Lacepède 1802 and Labrus rubrolineolatus Lacepède 1802. •Valid as Bodianus hirsutus (Lacepède 1801) -- (Kyushin et al. 1977:298 [ref. 19756], Yamakawa in Masuda et al. 1984:203 [ref. 6441], Chen et al. 1997:133 [ref. 26476] dated 1802). •Synonym of Bodianus macrourus (Lacepède 1801) -- (Fricke 1999:398 [ref. 24106], Parenti & Randall 2000:6 [ref. 24943], Heemstra & Heemstra 2004:339 [ref. 28072], Randall 2005:393 [ref. 28239], Gomon 2006:85 [ref. 28730], Randall & Victor 2022:178 [ref. 39916]).
