Fish Commission v. 23 (pt 2) [for 1903]; ref. 1631] Off northeastern coast of Maui Island, Hawaiian Islands, Albatross station 4080, depth 178-202 fathoms. Holotype: USNM 51613. Paratypes:CAS-SU 8645 (1), USNM 51669 (1). Type catalog: Böhlke 1953:90 [ref. 12291]. Bembrops is masculine, so correct species spelling is filiferus [thread bearing]. •Valid as Bembrops filifera Gilbert 1905 -- (Okamura in Masuda et al. 1984:289 [ref. 6441] as filifer, Okamura in Okamura et al. 1985:555, 711 [ref. 8056], Das & Nelson 1996:26 [ref. 22554], Lee & Kim 2000:31 [ref. 25725] as filifer, Nelson in Randall & Lim 2000:631 [ref. 25122], Nakabo 2000:1068 [ref. 25182], Hutchins 2001:40 [ref. 25847], Nelson 2001:3516 [ref. 26284], Thompson & Suttkus 2002:289 [ref. 25991] as filiferus, Nakabo 2002:1068 [ref. 26193], Shinohara et al. 2005:437 [ref. 28370], Mundy 2005:458 [ref. 28379], Hoese & Bray 2006:1501 [ref. 29000], Randall 2007:369 [ref. 30952], Larson et al. 2013:175 [ref. 32988]). Current status: Valid as Bembrops filiferus Gilbert 1905. Bembropidae. Distribution: Eastern Indian Ocean, western and central Pacific: Western Australia; Ryukyu Islands to southern Japan and Kyushu-Palau Ridge east to Hawaiian Ridge and Hawaiian Islands; Chesterfield Islands (New Caledonia). Habitat: marine.
