Paratypes: CAS-SU 9780 (1); USNM 53274 (1), 111747 (5). Type catalog: Böhlke 1953:94 [ref. 12291] as tanegashimae, Springer et al. 1991:24 [ref. 18888]. Type information: Springer & Eschmeyer 1974:567 [ref. 21415]. The name refers to Tanegashima (Tanega Is.), but the original spelling was tanegasimae. •Synonym of Praealticus amboinensis (Bleeker 1853), but a valid subspecies -- (Fukao 1985:113 [ref. 21281]). •Valid as Praealticus tanegasimae (Jordan & Starks 1906) -- (Yoshino in Masuda et al. 1984:300 [ref. 6441], Shen et al. 1986:27 [ref. 13821], Bath 1992:290 [ref. 20223] with USNM 53274 as holotype, Nakabo 2000:1100 [ref. 25182] as tanegashimae, Nakabo 2002:1100 [ref. 26193] as tanegashimae, Adrim et al. 2004:125 [ref. 27715], Patzner et al. 2009:460 [ref. 30396], Motomura et al. 2010:197 [ref. 31256], Motomura et al. 2015:28 [ref. 34709], Dewa et al. 2022:24 [ref. 40001]). Current status: Valid as Praealticus tanegasimae (Jordan & Starks 1906). Blenniidae: Salariinae. Distribution: Northwestern Pacific. Habitat: marine.
