The specific name potamophila is treated as an adjective. •Synonym of Mogurnda obscura (Temminck & Schlegel 1845) -- (Okada 1961:649 [ref. 6363]). •Synonym of Odontobutis obscura (Temminck & Schlegel 1845), but a valid subspecies -- (Iwata et al. 1985:379 [ref. 6724], Bauchot et al. 1991:11 [ref. 19958]). •Valid as Odontobutis potamophilus (Günther 1861) [often seen as potamophila] -- (Chae 1999:12 [ref. 25430], Kottelat 2001:59 [ref. 25482], Iwata & Sakai 2002:110 [ref. 25892], Wu et al. 2002:9 [ref. 26026], Iwata 2011:71 [ref. 31725], Kottelat 2013:388 [ref. 32989], Zhang et al. 2016:197 [ref. 34477], Zhong et al. 2018:214 [ref. 36028], Parenti 2021:434 [ref. 38603], Hu et al. 2023:3 [ref. 40381]). Current status: Valid as Odontobutis potamophilus (Günther 1861). Odontobutidae. Distribution: East Asia: middle and lower Yangtze River basin, Qiantangjiang and Minjiang River drainages (China). Habitat: freshwater.
