The subspecies chiliensis occurs from the Gulf of Guayaquil, Peru, south to Talcahuano and Valdivia Chile; subspecies lineolata occurs from Alaska south to tip of Baja California (Mexico) and Revillagigedo Islands (Mexico), and strays to Hawaiian Islands (U.S.A.).
