As Ophicephalus melanosoma in Bleeker 1856:214 [ref. 354]; and misspelled melanosoma by other early authors. •Valid as Channa melasoma (Bleeker 1851) -- (Roberts 1989:170 [ref. 6439], Vierke 1991:20 [ref. 16625], Kottelat et al. 1993:166 [ref. 23448], Lee et al. 1994:61 [ref. 23558], Kottelat & Lim 1995:249 [ref. 23210], Rainboth 1996:219 [ref. 22772], Musikasinthorn 2000:32 [ref. 24480], Kottelat 2001:63 [ref. 25482], Courtenay & Williams 2004:91 [ref. 27545], Grinang & Lim 2004:293 [ref. 28551], Tan & Ng 2005:134 [ref. 28283], Kottelat 2013:461 [ref. 32989], Ng et al. 2019:536 [ref. 36606]). Current status: Valid as Channa melasoma (Bleeker 1851). Channidae. Distribution: Southeast Asia: Malaya (Malaysia), Indonesia; introduced elsewhere. Habitat: freshwater.
