Holotype (unique): ?NMW 37160. Species originally described as above, but later as Pristopoma (Haemulopsis) brevipinne when illustrated and described in more detail in Steindachner 1869:129 [p. 10 of separate], Pl. 5, [ref. 4216]. •Valid as Microlepidotus brevipinnis (Steindachner 1869) -- (Allen & Robertson 1994:150 [ref. 22193], Bussing & López S. 1994:118 [ref. 23101], McKay & Schneider in Fischer et al. 1995:1162 [ref. 22829], Chirichigno F. & Vélez D. 1998:380 [ref. 24555], Nelson et al. 2004:145 [ref. 27807], Tavera et al. 2012:6 [ref. 32469], Page et al. 2013:149 [ref. 32708], Galván-Villa et al. 2016:147 [ref. 34871], Parenti 2019:163 [ref. 37021]). Current status: Valid as Microlepidotus brevipinnis (Steindachner 1869). Haemulidae: Haemulinae. Distribution: Eastern Pacific: Gulf of California (Mexico) south to Peru. Habitat: marine.
