Also appeared in Gmelin 1789:1493 [ref. 18139] with reference to Forster, Bloch, Seba, and other authors. Spelled tygrinus in Bonnaterre 1788:8 [ref. 4940]. Stegostoma fasciatum in prevailing usage. •Synonym of Stegostoma varium (Seba 1759) -- (see Goto 2001:83 [ref. 25912]). •Synonym of Stegostoma fasciatum (Hermann 1783) -- (Compagno 1984:200 [ref. 6474], Compagno 2001:186 [ref. 26323], Parenti & Desoutter-Meniger 2007:400 [ref. 29507], Last el al. 2010:59 [ref. 32461]). •Valid as Stegostoma tigrinum (Forster 1781) -- (Kottelat 2013:19 [ref. 32989], Dahl et al. 2019:526 [ref. 36993], Psomadakis et al. 2020:166 [ref. 37272], Ebert et al. 2021:38 [ref. 38234], Ebert 2022:458 [ref. 39662], Gloerfelt-Tarp & Kailola 2022:9 [ref. 41223], Allen & Erdmann 2024:53 [ref. 40796]). Current status: Valid as Stegostoma tigrinum (Forster 1781). Stegostomatidae. Distribution: Red Sea; Indo-West Pacific: Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), East Africa, Persian Gulf, Madagascar and Mauritius (Mascarenes) east to Marshall Islands and Samoa, north to southern Japan, south to Western Australia, New South Wales (Australia) and New Caledonia. Habitat: brackish, marine.
