euphraticus, Noemacheilus insignis Bănărescu [P. M.] & Nalbant [T. T.] 1964:175, Pl. 7 (figs. 11-12) [Mitteilungen aus dem Hamburgischen Zoologischen Museum und Institut v. 61; ref. 217] Euphrates (Firat Nehri) Basin, Malatya, eastern Anatolia, Turkey. Holotype: ZMH 1889. Paratypes: ZMH H1890 (36). Also 10 additional non-type specimens in ZMH. Type catalog: Wilkens 1977:158 [ref. 22013]. Original genus is correctly Nemacheilus. •Synonym of Orthrias insignis (Heckel 1847), but a valid subspecies euphratica (Bănărescu & Nalbant 1964) -- (Bănărescu et al. 1978:264 [ref. 9016]). •Valid as Nemacheilus euphraticus Bănărescu & Nalbant 1964 -- (Nalbant & Bianco 1998:110 [ref. 23810]). •Valid as Orthrias euphraticus (Bănărescu & Nalbant 1964) -- (Nalbant 1998:371 [ref. 26011], Fricke et al. 2007:51 [ref. 29533]). •Valid as Barbatula euphratica (Bănărescu & Nalbant 1964) -- (authors). •Synonym of Oxynoemacheilus insignis (Heckel 1847), but a valid subspecies -- (Prokofiev 2009:880 [ref. 30604]). •Synonym of Oxynoemacheilus argyrogramma (Heckel 1847) -- (Freyhof et al. 2012:308 [ref. 31752], Kottelat 2012:95 [ref. 32367], Kamangar et al. 2014:39 [ref. 33140]). •Valid as Oxynoemacheilus euphraticus (Bănărescu & Nalbant 1964) -- (Freyhof 2016:99 [ref. 34815], Freyhof & Abdullah 2017:84 [ref. 35169], Freyhof & Özuluğ 2017:385 [ref. 35216], Esmaeili et al. 2017:64 [ref. 35254], Freyhof et al. 2017:552 [ref. 35290], Freyhof & Geiger 2017:259 [ref. 35343], Esmaeili et al. 2018:44 [ref. 36089], Turan et al. 2019:[9] [ref. 36540], Çiçek et al. 2020:245 [ref. 37644], Jouladeh-Roudbar et al. 2020:165 [ref. 37983], Rakici et al. 2020:410 [ref. 37960], Saygun et al. 2021:47 [ref. 38525], Çiçek et al. 2023:8 [ref. 40616], Çiçek et al. 2023:347 [ref. 40625], Saad et al. 2023:11 [ref. 40501], Çiçek et al. 2024:73 [ref. 40789]). Distribution: Asia Minor and Middle East: Euphrates River and Tigris River drainages (Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran). Habitat: freshwater.
