Treating the specific name as an adjective, the name should be xanthoptera. •Synonym of Pempheris schwenkii Bleeker 1855 -- (Kim & Sasaki 2004:182 [ref. 27983]). •Valid as Pempheris xanthoptera Tominaga 1963 -- (Hayashi in Masuda et al. 1984:165 [ref. 6441], Kohno 1986:135 [ref. 22519], Koeda et al. 2013:231 [ref. 32431], Koeda & Bessho-Uehara 2024:151 [ref. 41814], Kai & Gosho 2025:76 [ref. 42505], Toyama et al. 2025:25 [ref. 42086]). Current status: Valid as Pempheris xanthoptera Tominaga 1963. Pempheridae. Distribution: Northwestern Pacific: East China sea (China) north to off southern Korea and Pacific coast of southern and central Japan, including Izu Islands (Japan) and Ogasawara Islands (Japan).
