Neotype designation by Fricke 1999:77 [ref. 24106] is invalid; see Fricke 2000:639 [ref. 24537]. •Synonym of Sardinops sagax (Jenyns 1842) -- (Parrish et al. 1989:2021 [ref. 19496]). •See Grove & Lavenberg 1997:190 [ref. 24023]. •Valid as Sardinops ocellatus (Pappe 1853) -- (Whitehead 1985:60 [ref. 5141], Whitehead & Wongratana 1986:204 [ref. 6284], Whitehead 1990:223 [ref. 14039], Bianchi & Carpenter in Bianchi et al. 1993:138 [ref. 25472], Fricke 1999:76 [ref. 24106], Munroe 2016:1738 [ref. 34560], Fricke et al. 2018:56 [ref. 35805]). Current status: Valid as Sardinops ocellatus (Pappe 1853). Alosidae. Distribution: Southeastern Atlantic, southwestern Indian Ocean: Angola to South Africa, in the Indian Ocean north to Delagoa Bay; Madagascar, Mauritius (Mascarenes). Habitat: marine.
